M’Hamid El Ghizlane is a small oasis village in southern Morocco, where the Drâa Valley gives way to the Sahara. For us, M’Hamid is more than the place where a desert journey begins. It is home — a village shaped by palm groves, earthen architecture, local traditions and generations of life at the edge of the desert.
The old kasbah preserves some of M’Hamid’s most evocative traces of traditional desert architecture. Its narrow passageways, earthen walls, interior courtyards and time-worn structures offer a glimpse into a way of building shaped by climate, available materials and generations of local life.
M’Hamid is not only a place of history. It is a living village, with its own rhythm, daily routines and meeting places. Its streets, square, mosque and palm groves show the contrast between the old kasbah and the town as it is today.
M’Hamid has long been connected to the routes that crossed the Sahara. Its position at the end of the Drâa Valley made it a natural stopping point before travellers and caravans continued south into the desert. This history of movement, exchange and nomadic life remains part of the identity of the region today.
M’Hamid is also shaped by its oasis environment. Palm groves, earthen architecture and the proximity of the desert have influenced everyday life here for generations. The contrast between green palms, adobe buildings and the surrounding arid landscape is one of the defining features of the area.
